The area is rich in natural values, comprising the protected flora and fauna of the Hortobágy National Park and of the exciting and fascinating areas along the Tisza River and its backwaters.
The Tisza River
An outstanding tourist attraction of Tiszakécske is the 22,5 km long section of the Tisza River, which belongs
to the town.
The forests along the river banks, are part of the Middle Tisza River
National Park. A big variety of protected plants and animals are also living here. In the forests, old trees are
hewed, lucky tourists being able to hear the wood-hewers cutting these. Some plants - mostly ampelopsis - climbing
on trees and bushes form curtain-like structures, giving the feeling of a tropic jungle.
Each year, in middle of June, the 'Dance of the mayflies' ('Tiszavirágzás') in Hungarian, meaning 'blooming of the
Tisza") is a great attraction for both, tourists and local people. The Tisza River holds a large variety of fishes,
offering great leisure time activity for anglers.
There is a 300 m long sandy beach alongside the river bank, opened every year during the bathing season from
June 1st till August 30th. (depending though on the water level). Several bars and pubs on the beach and holiday
resort area are waiting for people who choose to relax by the river. The lower part of the beach is the landing
place for river trip boats, while on the upper part there is a dock where small, private boats can land.
The Backwaters of the Tisza

The backwaters arose about 200 years ago through a natural closure. After flood control dams were built, the
backwaters have been used for storing inland water and for fish-farming. The backwaters were divided into small
lakes by wing-dams. If necessary, it is in the power of the town council to issue authorisation for refilling the
lakes with water, from the Tisza River.
The 100-acred backwaters and the nearby reed area is the living place
for a very rich flora and fauna. In the summer, one can see here aigrettes, boat-bills, black storks, common cranes
and wild ducks. One can also see here dun-birds and, during migration time, pintails and spoonbill ducks. Coots
and great crested grebes are also found here. Comfreys, these very unique plants, offer an excellent treatment
for a wide range of pains. A walk around the backwaters can offer a real pleasure.
Backwaters are used mainly by the Fishers' Association and the
local Hunters' Association.
Nature reservations, flora and fauna
The Middle Tisza Natural Park is situated along the river, from
Kisköre to Tiszaug. The flood-plains of Tiszakécske are a part of this nature reservation area. In the middle
of the 18th century, the river was regulated by dams, but the area has still preserved some of its original
large forests, and its rich flora and fauna. The wide variety of its flora, provides home and nourishment for
an enormous number of animals. Along the river, one can often catch a sight of quawks, herons and buzzards
nesting in the area. At the end of the summer, one may even see big crowds of black storks preparing for the
long flight. Along the river, there are lots of pits, from which the material for the dam construction has been
extracted. Today these became very unique spots, with a very special fauna. The old osiers by the pits present
a very beautiful sight. Howlets often move into the bigger holes.
The plain saline fields in the northern part of Tiszakécske
offer a wonderful experience for nature lovers. One already can go for a walk in early spring on the moss fields,
watching and enjoying the flying birds. Birds that one can see most often, are pewits. Godwits can also be often
seen here, being quite easy to identify them after their long beaks and characteristic legs. One can also spot
red-shanks easily walking in somewhat deeper waters. The owls like living on fields with high-grown grass. In
the moor around the fish ponds, herons, aigrettes and spoonbills hatch their eggs, while black storks come here
for food as well. This area provides living space not only for birds, but for frogs, water-snakes and clypeates
as well. In early spring, grape-hyacints burst into bloom and over the fields, one can smell the scent of camomile
and thymes. The blooming of blue and lilac asters and statices indicate the autumn to come.
Just on the opposite side of the river, there is the Tiszakürt Arboretum,
with a precious and spectacular flora. It provides a nice leisure time activity to visitors. The arboretum can be
reach by boat, by car, by bike or by the Nagyrév or Tiszainoka float.
